"Haiku 2" parallels a traditional haiku with a 5-7-5 form both rhythmically and in structure, but without words. This open instrumentation quartet version was extracted from “Six Haikus” originally written in 2011 for Loadbang, a contemporary quartet comprised of trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet and baritone voice. In 2018, while in residency with Sandbox Percussion at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute, we orchestrated “Haiku 2” for pitched metal pipes, ceramic rice bowls, wood slats, and a metal pot lid. Although that was the instrumentation we chose, this piece can be played with any ensemble of three melodic parts and one pot lid or similar metal object. Performers may choose any instruments in any octave. The pentatonic melodies can be transposed into any key.
